Blazin,
At one time I had nVidia cards set up in their dual configuration, SLI. In researching prior to installing a second card, I found that some users were having problems with adding a second card in SLI config due to same model cards having a different BIOS. The solution is to flash the BIOS on the cards which carries risk; it voids your warranty and in some cases can brick your cards. I flashed the BIOS on the older card to match the new one and didn't have any problems with them. The cards I was using were not expensive, so the risk was acceptable.
I assume your ATI cards could have similar BIOS issues.
