I think you can do it two different ways. One is download and burn/usb drive. Then buy a key directly from Microsoft. Or you can get OEM at a retail place.

I can honestly say it is worth it. I upgraded to Win 10 during the free upgrade period and haven't regretted it at all. It actually fixed a few bugs I was having with Win 7 by deleting some of the Win 7 crap I had on my computer that wasn't compatible with Win 10.
It also made my Win 8.1 laptop run way better after it's upgrade to Win 10.
